A Hostels to Homes development project comprising 6 grey sector hostels on a number of urban blocks in Nyanga.A consultative and participatory physical planning and design process engaged the existing 274 families in Forming a Housing Co-operative, developing Land use plans to accommodate densities and a range of family house types capable of incremental extension. 84 Community members trained in vocational skills and are currently constructing the first phase in an Institutional Subsidy, PHP process.
Community profiling and family interviews enabled a clear ‘fit’ with ‘actual needs means and preferences, alongside generating a record of current on site subsistence, economic, social and recreational activities which were accommodated in the physical planning.
